God said the flesh must die (Romans 6:6, Galatians 5:24). The flesh refers to our sinful nature, not just our body; it is our old nature - including our carnal mind -Romans 8:6. That’s why those that were baptized into His name were also baptized with Him in death.

It was not only a substitutional death but also a co-death (Romans 6:3).
When we are dead; lust, alcoholism, sin etc cannot touch us as we are "dead." Amen!
